Miami Mercury Testing

Following Mercury Marine’s launch of the new V-6 FourStroke outboard family, the Mercury UK team has been out in Miami testing the new engines.
The first boat test carried out was on a Boston Whaler 250 Outrage with Twin Mercury 225HP 3.4 Litre V-6 FourStroke setup. With 6 people on board and a weight of 4000kg, the boat reached a top speed of 51mph and 6000RPM at wide open throttle.
“For a heavy boat, the engines performed incredibly well”, commented Ben Allen, General Manager of the Marine Leisure Division, E P Barrus. “The torque has been dramatically increased, improving hole shot and the standing start to 50mph, which was noticeably different from the Verado L4. The power can be felt all the way through the rev bands, pushing you back into your seat all the way up to wide open throttle,” Ben concluded.
The new 200HP 3.4L V-6 FourStroke outboard was also tested in a twin setup on a Blackfin 242CC. Weighing 2700g with 3 people on board, the boat reached a top speed of 53mph and 5800RPM at wide open throttle.
Ben Allen commented “This was an impressive setup with comfortable cruising around 30mph at 3500rpm. Again, the power could be felt right the way through the rev bands and when throttling up from 3500rpm to wide open throttle, the power was intense. You could feel the torque of the engine picking the boat up and moving it along the water effortlessly,” Ben concluded.
This new engine platform features adaptive speed control maintaining RPM regardless of conditions resulting in to drop in RPM in turns or sharp manoeuvers.
The new 3.4L V-6 FourStroke outboard engine range will be available from Mercury authorised dealers in the UK from June 2018.
