Barrus expands its award-winning Capsize PIRS® offering
Published on: 11/06/2019
Following the success of the award winning 115hp and 150hp Capsize PIRS® outboard engines, Barrus has expanded its patented technology to the lower horsepower engine family to widen its product portfolio and fill a gap in the market.
PIRS® was first introduced in the late 1970s for the RNLI and armed services and enables an outboard motor to restart following submersion by draining the water from the engine.
Over the years, the Special Products Division has worked on the two-stroke offering; leading up to the latest Gen 2 FAST PIRS® and now the four-stroke Capsize PIRS® adaptation.
Capsize PIRS® is fully automatic and integrated within the engine’s electronic control unit. The system ensures that no water can enter the engine and is operated without removing the engine cover as, unlike a two-stroke engine, this can contaminate the oil and cause serious component failure.
The Special Products Division work closely with Search and Rescue teams to develop their patented technologies and recognised that a number of fast rescue craft use 60hp outboard engines. This new Capsize PIRS® model will replace the now obsolete two-stroke engine with more environmentally friendly, durable power.
Exclusive in the industry, all Barrus supplied outboard engines between 20hp – 150hp are SOLAS approved and some PIRS® engines are both SOLAS approved and meet the LSA code for fast rescue boats.
“The Capsize PIRS® development has been both exciting and challenging and we’re now pleased to be able to offer this fantastic new product to benefit our demanding customers,” commented David Etherington-Smith, Sales Manager for the Special Products Division, E. P. Barrus Ltd.
