Following years of research, development and testing, Barrus is pleased to launch a range of electric outboard motors to its Marine line-up.

In this first wave, three outboard engines are available in 6hp, 10hp and 20hp variations. These 48V outboards have a variable speed range that can be locked so they suit commercial and hire-fleet use perfectly.

With an adjustable leg length from short to long shaft, the Shire electric outboards are ready to pair with a range of vessels and the outboard tilt lock and adjustable transom angle position make rigging easy.

Shallow or dirty water is simply not a problem. The outboards have coolant reservoirs with a re-circulation pump housed within the leg, so no dirt or sand enters the system. Their compatibility with Mercury Marine prop shaft spline makes this only easier as they are readily available in different sizes for spares or replacement from Barrus.

Perhaps the cherry on the cake is that the system is belt drive, so no shafts, gears or oil changes are required, making them hassle-free maintenance!

Additional options are also available to enhance performance and ease of use including battery options such as lithium ion batteries and multiple battery packs that can be linked.

After extensive testing with the Barrus R&D team, The Electric Boat Company Ltd has placed the first order for four 6hp Shire electric outboards.

The Electric Boat Company operates a luxury self-drive hire fleet on the River Thames based at some of the most prestigious hotels in the area. Having recently been awarded a new contract by the National Trust to operate a hire fleet at Cliveden Estate, they were looking for a reliable electric outboard motor that would withstand daily use throughout the season.

The clean, quiet propulsion of electric power delivers a unique boating experience that The Electric Boat Company are keen to promote as visitors can hold a conversation without raised voices over the engine and get closer to wildlife than ever before.

Electric outboards have a practical impact on the service, too. No fuel needs to be transported or stored and a well-designed electric boat will provide a full day’s cruising after a single charge with minimal ongoing maintenance costs.

And all that’s before the environmental benefits!

“The 6hp Shire electric outboards provide enough power to bring the boats to hull speed when we are on-board and allows us to easily reduce the power settings for our hire customers,” commented Sam Harris, Electric Boat Company Ltd.

“The closed loop cooling system and ability to adjust the maximum speed so easily makes these outboards ideal for a hire operator. The battery being independent of the motor is also a huge advantage as we can customise the capacity to suit our needs rather than having to swap batteries over during the day.”

“With a remote steering set-up, the boats are extremely responsive and intuitive to handle. Anyone considering purchasing a Shire electric outboard is encouraged to come and try one out on the water!” Sam concluded.

The new fleet from The Electric Boat Company Ltd is branded as Boating at Cliveden. For more information, visit www.boatingatcliveden.co.uk.
