Built To Last

Published on: 17/08/2016

When it comes to buying new tools, one of the most important factors for keen gardeners is durability. Will it stand the test of time? For one brand the answer to this is a resounding yes.

WOLF-Garten has been producing innovative, premium quality garden tools since 1922. The brand’s roots stem from a revolutionary method of soil cultivation involving tools that pull rather than push, enabling gardeners to work in an upright position. The days of backache were over!

From this, WOLF-Garten invented the first interchangeable tool head and handle system which developed into the ever-popular multi-change® system that is at the heart of WOLF-Garten’s product range today. The multi-change® system is a quick, easy and secure way of connecting tools to different length handles.

The highest quality design has been a cornerstone of the brand’s ethos throughout its entire history, ensuring that quality, durability and reliability have not been lost in all of its products. At this summer’s RHS Tatton Flower Show, a 1950’s WOLF-Garten soil tiller was unearthed and the similarities are undeniable. By comparing the tiller to its modern day counterpart the brands heritage and design traits instantly become apparent.

The vintage tool, in pristine condition, demonstrates the potential lifespan of WOLF-Garten products and reiterates that they are built to last. With a wooden handle and green head, it differs slightly to the multi-change® version in the now well-known and established red and yellow. It is in the tool head where the lack of changes is the most striking and demonstrates how the concept designed over 60 years ago was so enduring and effective that it has stood the test of time, with only a few minor changes being made. The tiller breaks down clumps of soil to a fine tilth whilst hoeing as it moves along and the only development to aid this has been to angle the roller tines for breaking up the soil more evenly. The roller system has also been finessed to give a smooth motion.

“The tiller has always been one of the more popular heads and has been in the multi-change® range since its inception in 1982. We’ve been fascinated to see the older tool and the similarities are astounding. The WOLF-Garten brand has a fantastic heritage and the condition of this product, which we believe to be around 60 years old, is a testament to the original design. As they say, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!”.

Over 90 years since the first designs, WOLF-Garten products are now available to garden lovers in over 60 countries and are sold nationwide in the UK by selected stockists.
